“Congress has the power to shut down loopholes on gun sales and enforce laws that can end this evil.”
(Chicago) Jonathan Jackson, candidate for Congress, 1st Congressional District, issued the following statement upon learning of the nation’s latest mass shooting on May 24. At Robb Elementary School in Ulvade, Texas, 19 children and two adults were killed by an 18-year-old gunman.
“My heart is broken. My soul is in pain. My prayers go out to the mothers and fathers, brothers and sisters, and all those who have lost teachers, family members, friends, siblings, or children. There have been 212 mass shootings in 2022 so far; that is 212 too many. Enough is enough.
“We need to hear from Congress today. Congress has the power to shut down loopholes on gun sales and enforce laws that can end this evil. We cannot let this continue anymore. We cannot simply forget until the next one happens.
“Mass shootings are increasing in scale and frequency. This is a nationwide public health crisis that cannot be ignored any longer. Our lawmakers need to step up and protect our citizens. Policing alone cannot fix this; this is about mental health, community health, and national health.
“We can put an end to the scourge of violence, but only if we come together in solidarity and push for stricter gun laws and expand access to mental health services nationwide. Our children and our communities need more than thoughts and prayers. They need real gun policy change that puts an end to this cycle of violence. We must love our children more than we love our guns.”
